Beautiful and easy crochet blanket stitches

A crochet blanket is one of the most rewarding things to create because you can make it practical, comfortable and adorn these blankets so easily. It will be a lot easier to do this if you select the stitch, yarn and size appropriate so it isn’t going to end up bulky, holey or misshapen.

Stitch selection (appearance, insulation and speed)

Whether or not the blanket will keep you warm depends on each stitch.

Close stitches (warmer): Stitches like single crochet and half double crochet give a warmer fabric. Perfect for winter throws (but require even more yarn!) and can be slower to make.

Moss, lemon peel or waffle stitch: Quick and easy to knit stitches repeated give a textured look rather than being complex.

Lacy patterns and granny-style designs are breathable, making them ideal for summer blankets or decorative throws.

Tip: don’t make the holes too big or little fingers can get caught in them, especially if you’re knitting a baby blanket. For Crochet Kits, visit //www.woolcouturecompany.com/collections/crochet-kits

Choosing yarn (fibre and feel)

The best yarn is going to vary, depending on who the blanket is for and what it will be used for.

Acrylic: A popular yarn for blankets, this is generally an inexpensive option and is soft to the touch – often machine washable. Good for everyday throws, and kids blankets.

Cotton: A very durable fabric that is breathable and perfect for warmer months or those who like natural materials. It may seem a little heavier and can stretch when wet.

Wool or wool blend: Keep you toasty warm and has more springyness, ideal for cosier winter blankets. This fabric will need gentle washing so always check the care instructions.

Also consider yarn weight:

DK worsted/ aran: Are popular all rounders.

Chunky: A perfect snuggler, but may become uncomfortably weighty with prolonged wear.

Sizing your blanket

Baby blanket: big enough to keep it in place on a pram, just the right size for naptime!

A lap blanket: for use on your sofa or wheelchair

Throw for a sofa/chair

Bed blanket: single/double/king sizes

This is especially true if you are following along in a pattern, some hook sizes will be recommended for the type of yarn and making up your blanket size matters so swatch away!

Choose a stitch based on the warmth you want, choose yarn according to who it is intended for (and how often they wash) and decide about size before commencing. Some small amount of planning ahead and a practice will not only make the process more enjoyable for crocheting a blanket but is also very helpful in making it your and everyone’s favourite blanket at home.
