What Happens During a Boiler Service

All engineers follow a set of checks that are carried out during a boiler service. The following is a guide as to what you can expect the engineer to do during the visit.

Visual Inspection First

Start with a visual check of the whole boiler, including the casing, pipework and flue. The engineer will be looking for any signs of damage or corrosion to ensure that the boiler and flue are operating safely and that there is good ventilation.

Heat Exchanger and Burner

The casing is removed to inspect the heat exchanger for any cracks or damage, and the burner is checked for any signs of wear, sooting or carbon buildup. A cracked heat exchanger can be very dangerous as well as being expensive to repair, so it’s good to catch any problems early on to save money and potential discomfort in the long run.

Controls and Safety Devices

The engineer also checks the thermostats, pressure relief valve and any other safety devices. He will test these to make sure they function as required. This is to ensure that the boiler does not over heat or over pressurise and can cause damage to the appliance and surrounding area.

Combustion Efficiency Test

The flue gas analyser is then inserted into the flue to take a combustion analysis. This will give an indication of the efficiency of the appliance, and highlight any faults which may be consuming excess fuel and causing higher running costs.

Cleaning Key Components

After the inspection of the boiler, the engineer will then proceed to clean any parts of the boiler that may have gathered debris throughout the year. This could include the burner, the heat exchanger, and any other parts.

What the Engineer Records

Once your boiler service has been completed the engineer will detail the findings of the service, highlighting any parts of the boiler that may require attention in the near future. The engineer will then sign off the service record which will be left with you. As a homeowner in Cheltenham it is essential to check the Gas Safe registration of any engineer before allowing them to complete any work on your boiler. By servicing your boiler every year, you can rest assured that your heating system is safe to use and is running to its full potential, in order to avoid any potentially disastrous breakdowns during the winter months.
