The benefits of using concrete

Concrete far exceeds timber as a material for construction and will not burden the owners of buildings with endless maintenance costs. Flexible and durable, concrete is a sustainable and cost-effective choice for both residential and commercial buildings.

DURABLE

When something is built with concrete, it is built to last. Concrete actually increases in strength over time. The 100-years service life of concrete helps to save resources by lessening the need for reconstruction. Concrete is highly durable – it is resistant to eroding from weather and natural disasters, requires little repair and little care, meaning concrete leads up to a strong investment.

MONEY SAVING

The energy requirements of construction typically total 85% of building energy use during the service life. Concrete gives the most efficient and economical material for constructing energy efficient buildings.

A concrete building’s sustainable life cycle can result in savings of more than 20% of the total construction cost. Much of the savings come from the thermal mass of the concrete, which can harvest natural energy sources like the sun, and can also capture heat energy from lighting fixtures and other equipment in the building. SECURE

Concrete is safe, secure and healthy for the occupants of the building. It is also inert so it does not burn. It also doesn’t provide the right environment for rot and mildew to grow. It also doesn’t release any  organic compounds and allows for good air quality in the interior. Superior quality construction helps to stop pollen, dust and other air pollutants.

Concrete is a known favourite of building firms, engineers and architects. Construction methods have been perfected and are now understood better, not like new materials or systems that could endanger health and safety.

The structural integrity of the concrete provides extra protection against earthquakes and bad weather. Thanks to the solid construction and benefits of thermal mass, concrete provides tougher protection against the effects of changes in outdoor temperature, which means that the interior can maintain a consistent room temperature, throughout the year.

SUSTAINABLE

Environmentally conscious builders seek building materials that have the least environmental impact. Produced from abundant materials available locally, the longevity of concrete helps to make the most responsible choice for a sustainable future.

In the life cycle of concrete, recycling is present from beginning to end. Many waste and industrial byproducts that end up in landfills are used in cement kilns or can be added to the concrete mix to provide the desired characteristics. Used concrete can be recycled and used as an aggregate in laying road surfaces or in new concrete.

While the production of one cubic meter of conventional concrete produces more than 200 kilograms of carbon dioxide, this effect is overcome by including additional cementing materials, and by using waste products to heat the cement kilns.

  1. I like that you talked about how a concrete building’s sustainable life cycle could result in saving more than 20% of the total construction cost. I passed by a construction site while walking to work yesterday and I saw some workers were dealing with concrete. From what I heard from an engineer friend, it seems construction sites hire industrial concreting contractors for their concrete needs.
