Three Ways to Care for your Mental Health

Mental Health is something that we all need to look after – here are three practical ways that you can do exactly that…

Diet – The food that we eat has an affect on our mood and our mental wellbeing. A healthy diet that contains all the good things we need is important to look after mental health. Lots of green vegetables and plants, as well as fruits should be in the diet. It is best to avoid or limit foods that are processed and contain lots of salt, sugar and additives. Making sure that you have the correct vitamins is important – most of these can be obtained from a good diet, however, vitamin D is a supplement that you might need to take in the winter months as we get it mainly from sunlight (which is in short supply in the UK in the winter!).

Exercise – When we exercise it not only benefits our body physically, but it is also known to lift our mood and help with our mental health. There are many forms of exercise that you can do, so you don’t have to spend hours on the treadmill at the gym! Going for a country walk, swimming and playing sports are just some of the ways that you can exercise. Doing some gentle exercise even when you are feeling low can really help to lift your mood.
